| Too often the
instinct of European Union institutions is to ban or tax a product they
don't like based on unjustified scare stories. In many
cases, this affects products that have formed an important part
of cultural life.
Those promoting bans succeed
by divide and rule - those adversely
affected or concerned about a certain ban are typically small in
number and the issue is seldom a defining issue for others.
Few outside of Sweden care about Snus (smokeless tobacco) and
while German car manufacturers and their customers maybe upset by the proposed
discriminatory tax
on large and performance cars, the unaffected public are not
overly concerned. Ban the Bans!
believe that citizens of Europe should have the freedom to choose the
products they use. We seek to bring together people and
organisations from across the European Union to campaign against
irrational and damaging bans or taxes on products Europeans wish to use.
Initial targets include:
Opponents of individual freedom are
succeeding in implementing these bans as there is no European-wide
network campaigning for freedom. Progressive Vision, the
organiser of the monthly Brussels Network, Wednesday Meetings; is developing the
Ban the Bans! campaign with partner think tanks and campaign groups
across Europe.
The campaign will seek to:
- Develop media coverage for the
campaign across Europe
- Research MEPs' positions on
these bans
- Lobby MEPs and national
politicians to overturn or stop these bans
