STAFFORD HOSPITAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS FAILINGS OF CENTRALISED NHS 24 February 2010 Responding to the release of a report on Stafford Hospital, classical-liberal think tank Progressive Vision has argued that the failings of Stafford show that a centralised National Health Service cannot deliver the best health outcomes for British patients. Shane Frith, Director of Progressive Vision, said: “This report should destroy once and for all the idea that the NHS is the envy of the world. According to our research, more than 30,000 people in England and Wales are dying every year who would not die if the NHS really was the best health system in the world.” “The failures in care in Stafford show the underlying problems of a centralised, bureaucratised health system that is unable and unwilling to offer real choice to patients. Under the current system patients are seen not as valued customers, but instead as a drain on the system. The families of Stafford Hospital patients knew the hospital was failing, but were given no choice but to go there.” “We believe a better option is for Britain to adopt a fundamentally different approach to health care, through the introduction of individual Health Savings Accounts. These accounts are currently the basis of the Singaporean health system, which has drastically better health outcomes, whether in cancer survival rates, infant mortality rates, or other health outcomes.” End
