MEDIA RELEASE: FALL IN HOUSE BUILDING SHOWS NEED TO DITCH “AFFORDABLE HOUSING” 14 June 2008 The fall in the number of new home built in Britain this year requires a positive response from government, according to classical liberal think tank, Progressive Vision. Shane Frith, director of Progressive Vision, said; “Caroline Flint claims she doesn’t underestimate the problems facing the construction industry, but it is her government that is responsible for many of the most serious obstacles to the building of new homes. “Planning requirements, such as ‘affordable’ or ‘key worker’ should be ended - they discourage both builders and local councils.
“Central government must also
cease taking the proceeds of housing development from local
councils. Without financial incentives, local councils and local
people have no real interest in having new house building in their
area.” ENDS |
