SCOTTISH ALCOHOL PLANS ARE UNFAIR, UNREASONABLE AND UNENFORCEABLE 2 March 2009 Responding to the Scottish government’s plans to combat alcohol abuse, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think tank, has branded the SNP’s plans “unfair, unreasonable and unenforceable”. Shane Frith, director of Progressive Vision, said; “Drinking alcohol is a matter of personal choice and responsibility. “These interfering, mean-spirited, nannying proposals are unfair, unreasonable and unenforceable. “The overwhelming majority of people consume alcohol moderately and sensibly. They should not be penalised because of the reckless behaviour of a few. “If a six pack of special brew is to have a minimum price slapped on it, why won’t the Scottish National Party also ban giving away free alcoholic drinks at receptions and parties? “If the drinking age is raised to 21 – and student bars are ripped out of every college and university in Scotland – politicians should be unsurprised when more and more young people use illegal drugs as an alternative to alcohol. “It is astonishing that a political party supposedly committed to devolving power and responsibility should act in such a dictatorial and controlling manner. “Yet again, the knee jerk response of politicians is to introduce draconian proposals to punish us all, rather than to ensure that individuals are held accountable for their choices, actions and behaviour.” ENDS |
