MEDIA RELEASE: JOB CUTS IN HOUSE BUILDING INDUSTRY SHOWS NEED TO DITCH “AFFORDABLE HOUSING” AND STAMP DUTY 9/7/2008 Today’s announcement of severe job cuts in the house building industry requires a positive response from government, according to classical liberal think tank, Progressive Vision. Shane Frith, director of Progressive Vision, said; “The government can take three key steps to reinvigorate Britain’s building industry. “Firstly, they should scrap stamp duty, which acts as a serious disincentive to those considering buying a home. “Secondly, planning requirements, such as ‘affordable’ or ‘key worker’ housing should be ended - they discourage both builders and local councils. “Finally, central government must stop taking the proceeds of housing development from local councils. Without financial incentives, local councils and local people have no real interest in having new house building in their area.” ENDS |
