MEDIA RELEASE: FAILING SCHOOLS EMPHASISES NEED FOR SCHOOL CHOICE 10 June 2008 The Government’s threat to close failing schools is hollow, unachievable and unnecessary, according to classical liberal think tank, Progressive Vision. It argues that a system of school choice is a far less blunt solution. Shane Frith, director of Progressive Vision, said; “The current proposal is completely unrealistic unless the government has the ability to close all the threatened schools. “A system of school choice, as operated in Sweden, would create an environment where bad schools improve rather than close. The Swedish experience shows that when parents are given the ability to choose schools, and money follows the student, schools which lose 10 per cent of their students are forced to improve. Few schools ever close. “Centralising directives from Whitehall, such as this, are mere window dressing and are doomed to failure.” ENDS |
